How seeing a doctor works in Australia, what bulk billing means, and why Brazilians on a working holiday need insurance.

Health is the topic everyone postpones until they need it. I postponed it too — and learned the hard way the day a pipe landed on my finger at work.
The logic here differs from Brazil in two ways: you always go through a GP before any specialist, and an appointment may or may not be free depending on whether you have Medicare. For Brazilians on a working holiday the answer is usually no, which is exactly why insurance stops being a luxury.
What nobody tells you
Ambulances are charged for. And they’re expensive. It’s not a free public service, whatever you may assume — check whether your insurance covers transport.
Book the GP ahead. Busy clinics mean days of waiting for a slot. For things that can’t wait there are urgent care clinics that take walk-ins, and the public hospital emergency department for anything genuinely serious.
Report a workplace injury the same day. Without a report, getting treatment and lost days covered becomes much harder. Tell someone, ask for it in writing, and keep a copy.
Dental is expensive and rarely covered. A lot of people sort their teeth out on a trip home. If you can do it before you fly, do it.
Sunscreen is not optional. The sun here burns in minutes, even on a cloudy day and even in winter. It’s the advice locals repeat most, and they repeat it because it’s serious.

StandardThe public system, available to residents and to citizens of countries with a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia. Brazil has no such agreement, so Brazilians on a working holiday are usually not covered and rely on private insurance.

Standard What I useEffectively mandatory in practice for anyone without Medicare. Compare emergency, hospital and repatriation cover, not just the monthly price. Keep the policy number on your phone.

Chemist (pharmacy)
CheapChemist Warehouse is the big, cheap chain for over-the-counter medicine, vitamins and toiletries. Australian pharmacists give a lot of advice and can resolve small things without an appointment.

Workplace injuries
Cheap What I useHurt at work? Tell your supervisor immediately and get it recorded in writing, even if it seems minor. Workers compensation covers treatment and time off, but it depends on the incident being reported on the day.
